Review: Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara

Even though this blog is mainly a skincare blog, I decided to include some makeup bits in it as well. Because we put makeup on our faces, it can affect our skin health. I only ever wrote about a mineral powder (which I consider somewhere between makeup and skincare) before, and today I will write about a mascara I’ve been trying out lately. It is the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara.

About Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara

Maybelline says:

‘Sky High lengthening and volume mascara for sky-high lash impact from every angle. Long lasting mascara delivers full volume and limitless length.

Sky High lash impact from every angle! Lash Sensational Sky High mascara delivers full volume and limitless length. Exclusive Flex Tower mascara brush bends to volumize and extend every single lash from root to tip. Washable mascara formula infused with bamboo extract and fibres for long, full & lightweight lashes, that don’t flake or smudge. Available in Very Black and Blackest Black. Allergy tested. Ophthalmologist tested. Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Removes easily.’

I don’t consider myself being too fussy with mascaras. But I expect a few things: lengthening, separating and being easy to remove. And according to the description Maybelline gave, I expected exactly that. Especially because this mascara keeps popping up everywhere – Instagram, Facebook, and ads on tv.

Packaging, texture and use

Packaging

The mascara comes in beautiful muted mauve packaging with a nice-looking 3D printed name. I must admit, it looks pretty elegant and attractive. The size of the mascara is 2.2g. That, if I’m not wrong, is less than what you usually get in mascara. The brush is thin with short bristles, and I find this kind of brush works best with my eyelashes.

Texture

On the first try, the mascara was very wet. It was so wet that it was hard to apply it and separate the lashes. After some 5-10 applications, the mascara dried up a bit and is good to use.

Use

The use of mascara is pretty straightforward. As I said, at first, it was hard to work with it because the formula was too wet, but once you use it a few times, it goes on pretty well.

My experience with Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara

I must admit, I’m not impressed with this product. Maybe it’s the fact that the hype made me expect a lot from it, but I am quite disappointed.

Firstly, the texture (wetness) of mascara is not very well balanced. In the beginning, it’s too wet, and it’s hard to apply it. And it’s like that for around 5-10 applications.

Then, the mascara gets to a perfect moisture level that lasts for about 10-15 applications. That is much shorter than in other mascaras.

Lastly, it dried out too quickly. I have been using it for about a month, and it’s already dry. But I suppose that’s due to the size of the mascara.

Also, the lengthening effect it gives is not impressive. I’ve tried cheaper mascaras that had a much better lengthening effect. This one is mediocre at best.

As far as the lash separation goes, I have no complaints there. It separates nicely and defines the lashes.

Another point I have to touch on is the removal. Even though Maybelline says it removes easily, I didn’t have that experience. I use my trusted Nivea Double Effect Eye Makeup Remover Review, but it took a lot longer and more rubbing to completely remove this mascara.

Conclusion

I must emphasize that my lashes are quite light and short, so I really need that lengthening effect to make them stand out. And the fact that this mascara promised so much and didn’t deliver made me even more disappointed. But I suppose not everyone is the same, and we all have different expectations and experiences.

Unfortunately, this time I ended up without long and luscious lashes. But that’s the fun of makeup – trying out different products and finding ones that work for you.

Packaging: 5/5

The packaging is beautiful. The shade of mauve is my favourite colour, and the brush works nicely with my eyelashes.

Performance: 2/5

Once again, This mascara didn’t fulfil my expectations. The only good thing is that it separates my lashes nicely, and I attribute that to the shape of the wand. The formula of the mascara isn’t the nicest, and it gets used up quickly.

Value: 3/5

For the price of €13.95, you get 2.2g of product. That is less than what we usually get. Considering it dries up pretty quickly, I don’t think it’s of good value. It is still affordable, but there are better mascaras for this price or even cheaper.

Overall: 3.3/5

Not the best but not the worst mascara I’ve ever tried. I’m glad I tried it out because those ads were haunting me, but I won’t repurchase, and I don’t recommend it. At least not for my fellow short-eyelashed girls.

Have you tried this product? What is your favourite mascara?
