Double cleansing – why is it so important?

So what is double cleansing?

Double cleansing, as the name says, it’s a method of cleaning your face twice. The first cleanser is an oil-based cleanser that is going to break down all the makeup, SPF, dirt, and excess oil from the day. The second cleanser is water-based to remove it all from the skin.

First Cleanse

A lot of people are scared to use oil on their faces thinking that it will block their pores and cause acne, but that’s far from the truth. It’s on your face for 30 seconds, so it doesn’t have time to cause any harm, but it will help immensely. The oil (or a balm) is the best thing to break down everything we put on our faces – like makeup and SPF. This way, we avoid harsh rubbing of our skin, and we just gently melt the day off our face.

Put a few drops of your oil cleanser on your face and massage it in gently. Add a little bit of water to make an emulsion, and massage it for 10-20 seconds until you see all the makeup is melted.

Products I like to use are Dermalogica Precleanse with apricot oil, Caudalie Vinoclean Cleansing Oil (review here) or my blend of oils. I mix castor oil (which is fantastic for deep cleansing the pores) and almond oil (which works as an astringent) in a 50:50 ratio. Another great combination is cold-pressed sunflower and castor oil. Any other cleansing balms or oil cleansers are also great for this step.

Second Cleanse

You should adjust this product to your skin type, and it should address any skin concerns you might have. I would always recommend some gentle cleansers to avoid over-drying your skin. But of course, everyone’s skin is different and can tolerate various products.

Cleansers I like for this step for my sensitive, acne prone-skin are Bioderma Sensibio Face Wash (review), La Roche-Posay Toleriane Softening Foaming Gel Wash (review), and Apivita Cleansing Creamy Foam (review).

When to do the double cleansing method?

I recommend using the double cleanse method every evening regardless if you wore makeup or not. Even if you didn’t put on any makeup, you did put SPF on (I hope), and your skin did produce some sebum during the day.
